Questions?

We're happy to answer! See the FAQs below or send us a note

  • Can I participate in the workshop online?
No, the workshop is given offline so participants can meet physically. We believe this works better than an online workshop.
  • What is the difference between implementation and impact? Is implementation a field in the programs?
In order to have impact your research has to be implemented, but there is a subtle difference. We talk about it in a general way and have these conversations during the programs. We discuss “How do I know if I am successful in the implementation of my research?”
  • How many participants can join the workshop?
In September there is room for 8 participants from MIT and 8 from the Groningen area including the UG, UMCG and universities of applied sciences. We will make a selection of the applications to fill the 16 spots. Results of the selection procedure will be communicated on Monday 28th of August at the latest.
  • Why do I need to upload 2 abstracts?
Please upload one abstract describing work from your group (500 words, preferably not yet published) and another published abstract from a conference/manuscript that you were not an author on. This abstract should be related to healthy aging/energy transition and at least one author should be from your region.
  • What if I’m interested to participate but can’t join the workshop?
Please submit your interest via this link
  • How big should the impact of my idea be?
It can be small and local and for a narrow population but still make a big impact for that group.
  • Who can I email for any details on the day of the workshop?
Please email mit-ug@mit.edu for any questions you have. In the welcome packet there is also a link to a whatsapp group you can join.
  • Do I have to present my work? Or the work from the department?
Present your own work. It is important you present the work that interests you and you know a lot about.
  • Is MIT super impact based?
The Impact program is led by a small group at MIT. It does not reflect the entire institute, but in general MIT cares a lot about impact.
  • What is involved in the presentation I need to upload (what is the 5 minute presentation about)
We ask that you upload draft slides (pptx format) for a 4-5 minute presentation about your research. These can be updated during the workshop, and will be presented on day 3. The idea is that you create a slide deck about yourself and your research. This is starting material for the workshop. During the workshop you will get more information about what to do with the slide deck. You can also include the written out text of your five minute talk.
  • What is the "published abstract" about?
A published abstract from another group that relates to your own area of interest. Preferably one author is from your region. An idea for the other abstract is: Google a paper, put the keywords of your own research area in and see what comes out. One of the abstracts that you find can be used as the second abstract for the application.
  • Who can I contact for more information
Please email mit-ug@mit.edu for more information
  • I do basic/fundamental research. Am I still eligible for the program?
Yes, you are. During the workshop you will start to see the elements that you can work on. Impact might not be an immediate company but the next steps that needs to be taken towards getting your research out into the world or to have other forms of added value. The impact you can create can differ by field and you can consider different angles.
  • Do I have to start my own company when joining the program?
No, you don't have to. Impact is more than starting a company. And there are different types of innovators - innovators that stay in basic research and innovators that start their start-up or do other kinds of impact.
  • For people travelling from the Netherlands: Who is paying for my trip?
The workshop is free of charge. However, travel expenses are not included. Depending on your faculty, grants are available for this trip. Send an email to Iris van der Ham (i.t.van.der.ham@rug.nl) for more information.
  • Are researchers from universities of applied sciences (e.g. Hanze and NHL Stenden) also involved?
Yes, researchers from universities of applied sciences can also participate.
  • For people traveling from the Netherlands: How can I arrange my hotel and flight on time?
We understand that, given the results of the selection procedure will be communicated on the 28th of August, you have limited time to arrange your flight and hotel stay. Therefore we are working on reserving spots on flights and rooms in hotels for the participants traveling from the Netherlands. Soon you can find more information about this in this section.
